Bird management, proofing and control

Although the health risks that birds pose to humans has long been understood, recent and ongoing news events are resulting in a much greater public awareness. This situation combined with the structural damage that bird droppings cause through their corrosive action and their tendency to accumulate and block drains means now is the time to deal with these problems in an economical and effective manner.

Ace Pest Control Ltd staff are fully trained and highly motivated. We specialise in bird control and proofing across London & the Home Counties. Over many years we have developed a loyal customer base and a strong reputation for quality and professionalism. Bird Free Gel

Birds see ultraviolet light so Bird Free appears to them as fire. In April 2011, when the first reports emerged of the remarkable abilities of Bird Free to deter birds, even from long-standing nesting sites, the press dubbed it ‘fire gel’.

Since it was introduced into the UK in 2011, Bird Free has become recognised throughout the UK, and Europe, as an effective, yet unobtrusive, bird control method: well-known installations sites include Covent Garden Market and Paddington Station in London, Mont St Michel in Normandy, Chateau de Chambord in the Loire Valley, Lutyens’ Thiepval Memorial in Picardie, Sagrada Familia in Barcelona and St Andrew’s University in Scotland, where it is keeping the gulls away.

Bird Free keeps all birds off all structures without harming them. It does so by altering their behaviour, not by acting as a physical barrier. Birds will completely desert a habitat, even one they have been using for years, once Bird Free has been applied.

Bird Free gel is applied in low-profile application dishes, only 8mm high. One of its distinct advantages is that it deters birds from landing even when these dishes are placed behind the leading edge of a parapet or ledge. This makes the dishes of Bird Free invisible from ground level, thus preserving the aesthetic appearance of the building, while at the same time keeping it clean.

Bird Free is quick and easy to install. It can be used indoors or outdoors and causes no damage to buildings or structures.

Developed in Korea, Bird Free has been installed at thousands of commercial sites worldwide. These include airports, government offices, sports stadiums, railway stations, hospitals, factories, pylons, bridges, historic buildings, and many other locations where birds had previously been a nuisance or a health hazard.

Especially formulated to be durable, even in the most exposed locations, Bird Free is not adversely affected by extremes of temperature, nor by wind, rain or snow.

Bird Free’s deterrent effect on birds is long-lasting. Left undisturbed, it will remain completely effective for at least 3 to 5 years after proper installation, even in the most exposed environment. Most installations will remain effective for considerably longer.

Bird Proofing - Netting

Nylon netting is attached to a pre-tensioned wire rope framework. This produces a taut net that birds cannot pass through and also find unpleasant to land on. The framework is anchored using a variety of methods; most common is the use of masonry bolts or clamps, on occasions additional support structures may require constructing to accommodate the wiring. All framework components have a long life, however if necessary it can be constructed using solely stainless steel. We use net colours that best match the underlying structure and we can also supply and fit fire retardant nets if such properties are required. This is often an effective method in protecting large areas of a structure with minimal cost and labour.

Unfortunately it can present access problems for window cleaners, painters or other maintenance workers, so its use should always be considered carefully as net removal and re-installation can be costly.

Netting is particularly useful in preventing birds access to alcoves, recesses and balconies that can be difficult to protect with other methods. When viewed head on netting is unobtrusive, however if viewed from the side it becomes more visible and can obscure and detract from a structure’s attractiveness.

Bird Proofing - Spikes and Barrier Coil

Spikes are aggressive looking steel or plastic projections, which make surfaces far less desirable for birds to perch or roost upon. They are usually constructed in the form of a long plastic base from which metal or plastic spikes stick upwards and slightly outwards. Attachment to the building is achieved by glue or by fixing directly into the surface material. Spike systems vary in size and robustness depending upon the type of bird they are designed to protect against, Ace Pest Control Ltd can advise you upon what you require.

A fitted barrier coil is very similar in structure to a slinky spring that has been stretched out and fixed in place. Coils perform in the same manner as spikes and are attached using similar techniques.

These commonly used methods provide a high level of protection and have long and effective lives. Spikes and coils are often easily visible from ground level; however we install them in a careful and tidy manner that dramatically reduces their negative aesthetic impact. Due to their flexibility they are ideal for small, irregular or uneven areas, and where other mechanisms are not appropriate or possible.

Bird Proofing - Post and Wire

Fine stainless steel wires are placed between fixed metal posts and then attached via small steel springs. This results in taut wires which prevent birds from perching on the original surface. The whole system resists damage due to the shock absorbing springs and this elasticity also makes perching on the wires an uncomfortable experience for birds. Several parallel wires are usually required to protect any one area and posts can be glued into position or fixed directly into brickwork.

This elegant and low visibility option does not significantly inhibit access and wires can be easily removed and replaced if necessary. From ground level this type of proofing is almost invisible and is ideal for protecting window ledges and sills. Correct installation of a post and wire system is labour intensive when compared to spike and coil installation, however material costs can be much lower.
